The international freedom of the press organizationReporters Without Borders has condemned LTV's firing of popular television journalistArta Giga. They praised the success of the show in exposing politicalcorruption and abuse of authority.
"We are very disturbed by this transfer. It is adisproportionate response to minor offences, one that seems to reflect anunderlying desire to restrict investigative journalists' access to popularprogrammes," said the June 26 statement.
The statement said that the situation was unfortunately nota unique one in Latvia,referring to last year's removal of News Service head Gundars Reders despitehis high ratings.
