Almost 20 Lithuanian NGOs have signed a petition to be sent tothe European Pariliament regarding the NordStream oil pipeline that is planned throughthe Baltic, just outside of Lithuanian waters.

The petition requests that the parliament conduct an independentanalysis of the possible environmental impact of the pipeline. It raises concernsabout chemical weapons and other materials at the bottom of the sea, arguing thatthe pipeline may "wake the sleeping dragon" by disturbing these munitions.

The petition, which was initiated by the Lithuania'sYoung Conservative movement, drew more that 17,500 signatures in its two-monthcampaign.
