VILNIUS - Next week, Lithuanian police officers will carry out a clampdown against motorists who drive whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
This action will be held in all 26 member states of the European Union at the same time.
The initiator of the police action is the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL). This is a European Commission-supported institution, whose main priority is to reduce the number of people being killed and seriously injured on Europe's roads.
Next year, Lithuania will also participate in TISPOL-organized police actions aimed at ensuring road safety and control.
More than 600 people were killed on Lithuanian roads this year. Last year, Lithuania ranked first in Europe in terms of the number of people killed in accidents per population of one million.
