Probo Koala a floating refinery

Oct 09, 2006
By TBT staff

TALLINN - The Estonian prosecutor's office said the toxic waste on board the controversial tanker the Probo Koala was the result of the production of gasoline from crude on board the ship, the daily Eesti Paevaleht has reported.
Samples taken from the impounded ship have shown that the so-called “slops” were not produced from cleaning the tanks, as it has been claimed, but from on-board gasoline refinery.
According to the Dutch press, the Dutch prosecutor's office has reached the same conclusion.
The ship, now under arrest in the Estonian harbor of Paldiski, has been inspected by a delegation from the Ivory Coast.
