VILNIUS - Lithuania made the mistake of supporting Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga's candidacy for U.N. secretary-general without having consulted Poland, the daily Lietuvos Rytas reported.
According to the daily, Polish President Lech Kaczynski was "outraged" by the failure of at least Vilnius to consult Warsaw after the Baltic states decided to nominate Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga for U.N. head.
The daily noted that Warsaw's position on Vilnius has substantially changed, and that bilateral cooperation had developed recently.
The paper added that, "one can presume that Vilnius would have supported the former Polish leader's candidacy more willingly than that of Vike-Freiberga."
