LET'S GET CONSPIRATORIAL!

Mar 02, 2000

There's really never a bad time to be a conspiracy theorist in Latvia.

It always seems there's an endless flow of shadowy ideas from Parliament and beyond.

Currently the theorists are hard at work deconstructing the actions of investigation commission chairman Janis Adamsons and his blockbuster announcement about the prime minister and the minister of justice and the alleged pedophile ring.

Inquiring minds suggest that this latest salvo happens to coincide with the start of Latvia's negotiations to join the European Union on Feb. 15.

They say every time the country manages to start its lip-lock with the West someone tries to intervene.

Remember: Adamsons' announcement came on Feb. 17 and faster than you could say "Helmut Kohl", it headed straight for the front page and the top of all newscasts.

All that was EU was quickly forgotten in Latvia.

Of course, Russia can never be neglected in such matters.

Some mensa-inclined minds there suspect the pedophile scandal is the logical conclusion of a turf war between commercial banks: One is championed by Andris Skele, the other by Janis Adamsons.

Then again, no clear evidence about this alleged pedophilia ring has managed to emerge from this theatre of the absurd.

Truthfully, such clarity in times of blurred senses would be the greatest conspiracy.
