VILNIUS - The Lithuanian Prosecutor General's office has asked parliament to cancel the legal immunity of MP Gintautas Mikolaitis, who fled the scene of a car accident several months ago.
Lithuanian MPs enjoy immunity from interrogation in pre-trial investigations.
On March 2, Mikolaitis, 46, crashed his Mitsubishi Carisma into a parked truck in the Raseiniai district. His car went under the truck and caught fire.
The driver and a passenger jumped out of the car, and the passenger was later admitted to hospital with pelvis pains.
Meanwhile, Mikolaitis came to the police on the following day only.
An investigation was launched into the accident. It took officials about three months to determine the guilty party and the level of injuries suffered by the passenger.
Prosecutor General Algimantas Valantinas handed a relevant request to Parliamentary Chairman Viktoras Muntianas on Wednesday.
