VILNIUS - Lithuania finally surrendered to international pressure Sept. 8, agreeing to shut down the first of two nuclear reactors at the Ignalina nuclear power plant by 2005.The energy strategy adopted by the government, however, clearly states that the country expects financial help from the European Union, which had hinted that failure to commit to closing Ignalina could hurt Lithuania's chances of joining the economic bloc.
