Oil spill could kill some 35,000 birds

Feb 08, 2006

TALLINN 's An Estonian ornithologist has said that the oil spill off the country's northwest coast might have killed more than 35,000 birds.

"Observing such oil disasters experts have come to the conclusion that not all birds reach the shore and end up in human hands," Vilju Lilleleht told the Baltic News Service.

He said it was not possible to count the number of animals that perish in such catastrophes, since only 10 percent make it to the shore, while the others sink.
