TALLINN,VILNIUS - The media has played a significant role in the Baltic states struggle, and later development, as independent nations. In the early 20th century, before the three countries even knew soverignty, newspapers exposed information that became a catalyst for political mobilization and an increasing demand for freedom. The media gave a voice to varied opinions and nationalist sentiment. From 1864 to 1905, Lithuania belonged to the Russian Empire and was subject to extensive "Russification" with great consequences for national publishing and the press.
