Lithuania respects Dutch vote on EU-Ukraine deal, says Grybauskaite

According to Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, the results of the Dutch referendum, which were revealed on April 7, show that the Netherlands are seeking changes in the European Union

Her comments come following the the Dutch voters' decision to reject the EU's association agreement with Ukraine.

"We respect the decision of the Dutch people,” said Grybauskaite in a press release. “The results of the referendum reflect a wish by the Netherlands' citizens to bring about changes in the European Union itself and to make it more open to its people.

"It is the task of Lithuania, as well as Europe as a whole, to continue to actively support Ukraine's European choice," she added.

Preliminary results show that 61 percent of Dutch voters voted against the EU-Ukraine deal in the non-binding referendum on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, 38 percent voted in favour of the agreement, with the turnout being just above the 30 percent threshold.

The referendum's Eurosceptic organisers have admitted that the vote was essentially not about Ukraine, but a convenient platform to push a broader anti-EU agenda and give citizens more say in Brussels.
