Latvia and China discuss bilateral cooperation

The Latvian Foreign Ministry has announced its Foreign Minister, Edgars Rinkevics, met with the new Chinese Ambassador to Latvia, Huang Yong, on September 7, 2015, to discuss bilateral political, and economic cooperation.

Rinkevics and Yong reviewed bilateral cooperation in the areas of politics, economics, culture and education.

Both emphasised the importance of cooperation within the context of the EU-China strategic partnership, plus cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European Countries using the 16+1 format.

Rinkevics also stated Latvia was interested in organising one of the next summits which will be hosted by Beijing this year.

He also expressed Latvia wishes to take on a coordinating role in the areas of transport and logistics.

The Latvian minister outlined a number of Sino-Latvian examples of cooperation, in particular the recent certification of Latvian food products in China, which opened opportunities for Latvian companies to export their dairy and fish products to the country. 

He also pointed to the Bachelor of Arts degree program taught in Latvian, which started on September 7 at the Beijing International Studies University.

Ambassador Huang’s accreditation visit to the President of Latvia, Raimonds Vejonis, has been approved for September 8. 

Huang Yong began working for the Foreign Service of China in 1987. He has served at the embassies in Brunei and Singapore, and was China’s Ambassador to Fiji from 2011 to 2014.
