Education minister to visit Lithuanian educational establishments in Poland

VILNIUS – Education, Science and Sport Minister Jurgita Siugzdiniene in on Friday paying a visit to Poland's northeastern towns of Sejny and Suwalki. 

Siugzdiniene will first pay her respects at the graves of Lithuanian volunteers in Berzniki, and will then visit the Lithuanian Consulate in Sejny before going to the town's Ziburys Lithuanian to meet with its staff and the heads of other Lithuanian schools. 

In Suwalki, Siugzdiniene will be shown around a kindergarten building where a Lithuanian school is expected to open in the autumn, the Education, Science and Sport Ministry said in a press release on Thursday.

The minister is also to meet with Suwalki Mayor Czeslaw Renkiewicz. 

The Bishop Antanas Baranauskas Foundation "Lithuanian House" is the founder of Suwalki's Lithuanian school which is planned to open to first graders in September and to be expanded continuously in the future.

The establishment of the school is being funded by the Education, Science and Sport Ministry. 

Suwalki is currently home to around 1,000 Lithuanians, including a number of young families.
