The New Sensation from Cape Verde – LURA!

The concert of young singer Lura, born Maria de Lurdes Pina Assuncao from Cape Verde, will take place
on 3 July at Riga Congress Hall.

The talented singer was born in 1975 – the year when Cape Verde split away from Portugal.
„There was nothing artistic about my family, my parents mainly listened to morna,” muses Lura, recalling her early youth and the time when she first heard Cesaria Evora , who was the first to make Cape Verde famous all over the world. Lura was seventeen when Juka , a singing star of African Music from Portugal, asked her to sing a duet with him for a music album. Lura never thought of singing, she thought her voice vas awful, but the duet with Juka for the album changed her life and made her understand that music is her life.

Lura’s music draws on Cape Verdean traditional music embracing the blend of traditional African music, Western popular music and Brazilian rhythms. Lura brings to her music a street-wise, urban sensuality infused with the passionate roots of Africa. The singer explains that in her compositions she explores several different styles of Cape Verdean music: the tabanka, the mazurka, the cola and São João.

Lura gradually discovered the potential of her voice, its deep and mellow timbre. In 1996 she recorded her first album Nha Vida with her own compositions. It was followed by the second album In Love. Very soon Lura became popular in Europe.

Lura’s album Di Korpu ku Alma (For Body and Soul) released in 2005 brought her world fame.
The album explores African rhythms and indigenious percussion instruments like the ferrinho and the tchabeta are used. For this album Lura was awarded Best Newcomer at the BBC Radio 3 Awards and Best World Music Album at Les Victoires De la Musique in France. In 2006 Lura released M’Bem di Fora which loosely means,
„I come from the country”. The latest release seamlessly borrows influences from the rhythms of Cape Verdean music, R&B, tango and tropicalia. In 2007 Lura sang her song Morna for the film Fados by Spanish film director Carlos Saura. Lura’s charm is in her passion and youthful energy , and – of course – in her fantastic power
of her truly unique voice.

BALTIC REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT FORUM 2008

Blue Sky Thinking

As the credit crunch bites and fiscal conditions tighten after a decade of unbridled economic growth, the property investment sector throughout Central & Eastern Europe is bracing itself for cloudier skies. This may be bad news for the speculators and adventurers, but is it good news for the market?

CEE Insight is teaming up with the Baltic Real Estate Investment Forum, now in its 5th year, for a two day senior level summit on how to prosper in the cooler credit climate. How are the financiers responding, and can you respond to them? Will investment funds follow suit, or will they dig deeper in the knowledge that the underlying picture remains positive? Are the Baltic States any more or less exposed than the rest of “New Europe”? And as it becomes tougher to create value, can the need to adjust to a longer term view ultimately pay dividends for the market, and play into your hands? Come and hear what the region’s top financers, investors and operators have to say before you turn off the taps.

Key Topics

  • Loan Finance - How exposed are the lenders in the cooler credit climate? International banks have placed substantial – so far winning – bets on the region’s commercial and residential markets, but is this the next subprime time bomb? Or are the Baltic and C&EE regions still insulated to a degree by the continuing cycle of fundamental economic catch-up, coupled with lower personal and business credit ratios than the West?
  • REITs & Funds - Will the pressure on loan finance rates shift the balance in their favour? Which leading investors see the current turbulence as a buying opportunity and what are they targeting? Where are the bargains and where are the “bull traps”?
  • IPOs & Fundraisings - Which IPOs and fundraisings have succeeded in this environment, and which have not? Is a pattern emerging, and are there lessons to be learned?
  • Commercial Investment - As retail spending dips, how will retail property owners cope? Will this signal the end of the recent retail investment wave, or will it simply smarten things up a bit? What about the developers caught in the middle?
  • Residential - Residential developers have sold fewer new homes in the past year than at any time in the last five years. Is this a temporary correction or the beginning of a bear run? What strategies are developers taking to survive?
