Belarusian citizen sentenced in absentia in Lithuanian genocide trial

A Kaunas court on Friday found Stasys Simkus, a Belarusian citizen, guilty of genocide and sentenced him in absentia to six years in prison on the charges of detaining Lithuanian guerrilla chief Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas. "The conclusion drawn by the court is that by participating in the detention of Ramanauskas-Vanagas and (his wife) Birute Mazeikaite, which were followed by torture, Ramanauskas was shot dead, and Mazeikaite was detained, Simkus committed genocide," judge Valdas Vitunskas said in the verdict.
