LATVIA

EAT OUT

THURSDAY, MAR 10 “Viaggio Gastronomco”, An Italian Food Gastronomic Journey

Casa Nostra Riga launches a gastronomic journey in a series of travels around Italy, savouring and highlighting the wine, cuisine, and ingredients of each of Italy’s regions.
The first featured region is Italy’s smallest, Val d’Aosta in the north, bordering France and Switzerland. Not only does it house the highest mountains in Europe, but also the highest vineyards, the robust produce of which you will be able to taste with the food.
Being the one region in Italy where pasta is rarely found, rice, polenta, and gnocchi are the usual complements to a menu that largely focuses on meat and dairy products. A large variety of cured meat is a popular staple, chestnuts a flavour highlight, and thick warming soups a specialty.
“Val d’Aosta cuisine is the ultimate comfort food,” says Laila Ferrari, chef and host of Viva Val d’Aosta.

Currently partner and chef at a successful restaurant in Piedmonte, Ferrari has lived in four different regions of Italy over the past nine years, but most time has been spent in Val d’Aosta. An accomplished project manager, Laila comes from three different cultures — Latvian, Californian, and Italian. Also a passionate adventurer, she moved to Latvia in 1990, later to London, but found that Italy was the right place to indulge her love of style and food. “I’m sure I was an Italian in a previous life because I’m completely at home around a table which is the heart of family life. Its food, nurturing, security, communication, celebration, and of course — La dolce vita,” she says.
Committed to authentic food, Ferrari notes that Val d’Aosta has much in common with Latvia — there is rye bread and hearty warming dishes suitable for a cold climate.

Gout de France  / Good France, Celebrating French Gastronomy

It’s being described as a festival that is one of a kind, offering a unique opportunity to savor the gastronomic delights which France has to offer.

Gout de / Good France will celebrate French gastronomy in various locations worldwide on  March 21, 2016. Over  1,000 chefs on all five continents are expected to join the event. Dinners served simultaneously in participating restaurants will honour the merits of French cuisine, its capacity for innovation, and its values of sharing, enjoying, and respecting the principles of high-quality, environmentally responsible cuisine.

In 1912, Auguste Escoffier started Les Diners d’Epicure (Epicurean Diners): one day, one menu, served in cities around the world, to as many guests as possible. In 2015, the first edition of Gout de/Good France took the idea further, bringing all categories of restaurants together globally. The second edition of this international event, taking place on March 21, 2016, will mark, once again, the concrete demonstration of French cuisine’s recent listing in the “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” category by UNESCO, and its influence on the world.

The French Embassy and French Institute in Latvia are the organisers of  the Gout de France / Good France festival in Latvia. This year 13 Latvian restaurants will take part in this festival and propose French menus.
